Drystone Wall, Reeth

The Story Behind the Image - Reeth, Yorkshire Dales

Our family was enjoying a wonderful week in a holiday cottage in Richmond, on the eastern fringes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

One day we decided to do a driving tour of the Dales, starting by heading east through Swaledale and then going over the Buttertubs Pass to Wensleydale and heading back west to Richmond again.

One of our first stops along the way was the pretty village of Reth, in Swaledale. We parked our car and while my wife decided that she needed a quick snack I started walking along the road into Reeth, looking for photo opportunities.

By chance or good fortune, I turned into a small lane that led into a farm field. I was immediately struck by the drystone wall, topped by a ramshackle gate. It just seemed like such a perfect Yorkshire Dales scene! I took at least half a dozen photos and this is my favourite.
