Thornton Force Waterfall

The Story Behind the Image - Thornton Force Waterfall

The Yorkshire Dales village of Ingleton lies in the south-western corner of the National Park. The village is famous for the 'Waterfalls Walk', a circular trail linking several impressive waterfalls on the River Twiss and the River Doe.

Our family took the Waterfalls Walk one day in June. It took us quite a while to reach Thornton Force from central Ingleton though I made the trip much longer by insisting on stopping every 100 yards to take photos.

What I remember most about photographing Thornton Force is that I had to skip precariously from rock to rock so that I could set up my tripod almost in the middle of the river.

Then I had to contort myself into ridiculous positions to get the camera close to the surface of the water, all the while having to avoid slipping on the wet stones and ending up head over heels in the water! After all that, I love the result!
