Bransgore lies just inside the boundaries of the New Forest, and just inside the Hampshire border with Dorset. Look for the thatched Three Tuns pub, and the attractive early 19th-century brick church of St Mary.

Fordingbridge is a lovely old market town known as the northern gateway to the New Forest (though in truth it is more to the west of the Forest than the north!). On King's Yard, just off Salisbury Street, is Fordingbridge Museum, where you can learn about the local history of the area.

The city of Winchester is beautiful and compact, cramming a remarkable collection of historical buildings into a small area. King Alfred the Great transformed the Roman city of Venta Belgarum into the capital of Saxon England. The prize of Winchester is the cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country. Close by are the ruins of Winchester Castle and the medieval palace of the powerful Bishops of Winchester.
