Little Meg Cairn photo, Brough Castle

Brough Castle stands at the western end of the Stainmore Pass between County Durham and the Eden Valley of Cumbria. It was erected around the year 1100 on a site used by the Romans. The best preserved feature is an early 14th century stone keep built by Robert Clifford. The castle was later extended and restored by Lady Anne Clifford, who did so much to preserve castles on her northern estates.
