Brougham Castle photo, Brougham Castle

Brougham Castle, near Penrith, stands in quiet countryside (though close to the busy A66) beside the gently flowing River Eamont. The castle is built on top of a Roman fort, and evidence of Roman foundations can easily be seen from atop the castle battlements. Brougham was one of the (many) Cumbrian castles rebuilt by Lady Annne Cliiford.
