Tomb of Roger de Montgomery, supposed founder of Shrewsbury Abbey. Montgomery (1020 - c.1095) was a cousin of William the Conqueror, and led the Norman right wing at the Battle of Hastings. In 1071 William named Roger the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury. He began the imposing castle across the Severn, and established a new monastery on the site of a Saxon church here. His tomb was destroyed during the Dissolution. This memorial shows a 13th century knight, but it has been ascribed to Earl Roger following the disappearance of the original tomb.
