Castle Combe

The Story Behind the Image - Castle Combe

A picturesque timber-framed archway spans the road beside a pretty village pub in the south Cotswold village of Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Castle Combe has been called 'the prettiest village in England' for good reason! The village exudes an air of old-world charm, aided by the fact that visitor vehicles are banned.

As a result, the village retains a peaceful charm, a charm that has been recognised on several occasions by film studios looking for an idyllic English village setting. Castle Combe was used as the setting for the original Dr Doolittle film with Rex Harrison, and more recently it appeared in the film War Horse by Steven Spielberg.

Our family has visited Castle Combe on several occasions. On this occasion, I was keen to photograph the medieval market cross in the centre of the village square, but unfortunately, patrons of the nearby pub had decided to bring their pints outside and sit on the steps of the market cross.

Disappointed, I wandered down the lane beside the pub and saw this lovely view of a pretty timber-framed building spanning the roadway, with the pub on one side. A happy accident and so typical of Castle Combe!
