River Torridon Sunrise, Scottish Highlands

The Story Behind the Image - River Torridon Sunrise

One wonderful autumn I spent two weeks exploring Wester Ross, taking in some of the most beautiful areas of north-west Scotland. For one week I was based near Torridon village, at the south-western .end of Glen Torridon.

As I explored the glen I kept being drawn back to a spot on the River Torridon where the water moved over a series of low waterfalls. I decided to try photographing the river at sunrise, with the light of the rising sun illuminating the glen.

What I hadn't planned on was the ever-changeable Highland weather. As I set up my tripod at a bend in the river facing west it became quickly apparent that the wind was from that direction and that it was driving a fine mist of rain into my face, and more importantly, into my camera lens. I couldn't take the photo I had visualised without the lens getting covered in raindrops.

I had no choice but to turn my camera around and face east along Glen Torridon. But behind every cloud, there's a silver lining, or in this case, a sunrise.

The morning sun was hidden behind the triangular peak of Sgurr Dubh (Black Peak), but as the sun rose it reflected off clouds above the mountain, creating an amazing orange light like wings over the mountain top.
