Stourhead is reason enough to visit England all by itself. It is a brilliant Arcadian design begun by Henry Hoare, incorporating ever changing vistas around a lake, replete with temples to Apollo and Flora, a rock bridge, a cascade, a pantheon, a thatched cottage, and a grotto. Hoare's vision did not run to the rhododendrons, added by a descendant, which are one of the main reasons people flock to Stourhead today. Best in: spring for rhododendrons, early summer for azaleas, and anytime for a truly wonderful landscape garden experience. My personal favourite among British gardens.

The National Trust calls Stowe "Britain's largest work of art", and they may be right. A Georgian garden replete with temples, arches, bridges, and allegorical statements built into the landscape. Peaceful woodland walks, planned vistas with monuments as a focal point. Capability Brown was head gardener at Stowe for ten years, and much of his work survives. Many garden buildings have been beautifully restored and thousands of shrubs and trees have been planted in recent years. Restoration work continues in the gardens and the house. The gardens belong to The National Trust but Stowe House (not National Trust) is occupied by Stowe School to which group visits can be arranged by appointment, Tel: 01280 818282.

In 1722 John Aislabie retired here after the South Sea Bubble scandal erupted during his tenure as Chancellor of the Exchequer. For the next 20 years he worked to create the best water garden in England, perhaps in Europe. Lakes, grottoes, canals, and cascades join with classical temples and the ruins of medieval Fountains Abbey to provide an unforgetable landscape.

Be sure to plan in time to explore the award-winning gardens, during your visit to Sudeley. There are 14 acres of carefully planned and lovingly executed plantings, divided into 10 distinct garden areas. In spring the White garden is a flood of tulips; the Queen's garden grows a splendid array of roses set among double yew hedges; the sheltered Secret Garden provides a home for semi-tender Mediterranean plantings which are glorious well into the autumn. The pheasantry and wildfowl area opened in 2004 is home to 15 species of rare and endangered pheasants. The gardens are managed on organic principles.
