A short stroll from the grounds of Walsingham Priory (the Abbey) stand the little-known remains of a 14th-century Franciscan friary, established by Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Clare in 1347. The monastic church is almost gone, but the domestic buildings and friary guesthouse stand almost to their full height.

Wymondham Abbey was founded in 1107 by William D'Albini, Butler to King Henry I, as a priory of Benedictine monks under the rule of St Albans Abbey. It was later refounded as an abbey in its own right and lasted until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. The great abbey church was saved from destruction by becoming the parish church for Wymondham.
