History oozes from the Hermitage; the location is compelling, in a bleak landscape of low hills just north of the Scottish border with Northumberland. The castle dates to the 14th century, and is forever associated with Mary, Queen of Scots, whose reckless ride here to visit James, 4th Earl of Bothwell helped hasten her fall from power.
