Smailholm is a 4 storey tower house set in wonderful rural isolation in the Scottish Borders. The tower dates to the 15th century, and is certainly picturesque, perched on a rocky outcrop above a small pool. Smailholm proved an inspiration to novelist Sir Walter Scott, whose family had a long association with the property.
