Cilgerran Castle stands on a high cliff above a wooded gorge, looking down on the River Teifi. Henry I built the first castle at Cilgerran in the early 12th century to impose his rule on south Wales. The most famous holders of Cilgerran were Gerald of Windsor, and his wife Nest, the 'Helen of Wales'.
