Penrhyn Castle photo, Penrhyn Castle

This mock-Gothic monstrosity - er, castle - was the work of George Hay Dawkins-Pennant, who created a Victorian fantasy on the mainland side of the Menai Strait, looking across to Anglesey. The interiors are staggering, especially the neo-Norman great hall, with fabulous plasterwork and furnishings including Old Master paintings. Whatever you think of Victorian Gothic, Penrhyn is worth visiting.
