I don't know where the name 'Hole-in-the-Wal' came from, but it pretty much describes this spot. The long looping path that leads up the south slope of Helvellyn climbs from this spot up to Striding Edge, along the famous aret to the summit, then circles around Red Tarn and descends Swirral Edge before coming back to Hole-in-the-Wall once again. Well, that's the theory. On this trip I missed the path in dense fog on Swirral and never did make it back to Hole-in-the-Wall!
