The south wall of the chancel of Middle Claydon church is almost entirely filled by the grand memorial erected by Sir Ralph Verney to his father Edmund. Edmund Verney was the standard bearer for King Charles I at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, where he lost his life. A ghostly apparition of the battle is said to appear of the lawns of Claydon House each year on the anniversary of the eve of the battle.
