Alnwick photo, Ye Old Cross Inn

This attractive bow window hides a fascinating historical oddity. The words above the window spell out 'Dirty Bottles', and that's the heart of the tale. It seems that a Victorian landlord of the inn dropped down dead after placing a set of bottles in the window. The bottles were then declared to be cursed, and no one since has dared to touch them. So there they sit, year after year, gathering dust (and attracting thirsty visitors to the inn).
