A short walk from the market place is the Tenantry Column, a Doric column which may have inspired the design of Nelson's Column in London. It was built in 1816 in memory of Hugh Percy, the 2nd Duke of Northumberland, by his tenants, in gratitude for the Duke reducing their rents. The tower is 83 feet tall and is topped by the Percy Lion, the symbol of the Percy Dukes of Northumberland.
