Chapel of Garioch is not, as the name might suggest, a chapel, but a small village, located about three miles north-west of Inverurie. The lordship of Garioch dates back to at least the 13th century when the sister of Robert Bruce was Lady of Garioch through her marriage to the Earl of Mar.

Cullen is a picturesque seaside town and former royal burgh. It seems likely that a royal castle existed here in the medieval period and it is quite possible that Elizabeth, the second wife of Robert Bruce, died here in 1327, as shortly afterwards King Robert endowed the local church with a chaplain whose job was to pray for her soul. The first known royal charter was granted by James II in 1455.
