Helford, Cornwall Thatched Cottage

The Story Behind the Image - Helford, Cornwall Thatched Cottage

Helford is a very pretty village in the north-east corner of the Lizard Peninsula in south Cornwall. The village lies on the south bank of Helford River, and a foot ferry takes passengers across the river to Helford Passage on the north bank.

Writer Daphne du Maurier stayed in Helford and set her famous novel 'Frenchman's Creek' here. The real Frenchman's Creek lies just north of the village and you can see the location that inspired Du Maurier by way of a short trail over the headland.

My wife and I came to Helford on a sunny day in spring. We parked at the village parking area as no visitor vehicles are allowed into the village itself.

We strolled down the hill into the village and practically the first thing we saw was a picturesque footbridge leading across an inlet of the Helford River. On the far side of the footbridge was this lovely thatched cottage. What an idyllic location and a picture-perfect thatched cottage!
