Thatched Cottage, Isle of Skye

The Story Behind the Image - Thatched Cottage, Isle of Skye

One of the most interesting visitor attractions on the Isle of Skye is the Skye Museum of Island Life in Kilmuir, on the Trotternish Peninsula. The Museum preserves a traditional way of life practised over generations by Skye residents.

Part of the Museum recreates traditional thatched dwellings. Here is one, set on a slope below a colourfully-painted farm wagon. In the distance, you can see the hills of the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles.

I didn't actually come to Kilmuir to visit the Museum; I was looking for the old burial ground, where the Jacobite heroine Flora MacDonald is buried. My way to Flora MacDonald's grave took me directly past the Museum and I just couldn't resist!
