Middleham Castle, Yorkshire Dales

The Story Behind the Image - Middleham Castle

The picturesque village of Middleham lies on the eastern fringe of the Yorkshire Dales. Rising above the village stand the ruins of Middleham Castle, built around 1090 by Ralph fitz Ranulph.

It is actually the second castle in Middleham for shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066 a cousin of William the Conqueror called Alan 'the Red' erected a timber fortification at another location.

I was exploring the castle on my way to a photography holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. The day wasn't great, and I was having trouble capturing the castle from within the walls as there simply wasn't enough room to take it all in.

I finally decided I had better get on to my next location and I drove out of Middleham towards Leyburn. As I did so, the sun magically appeared. I looked back and saw horses grazing peacefully in the fields overlooking the castle ruins. I simply had to stop!

I found a place to pull over by the side of the road and park, and ran back to the field where the horses grazed. I only had time for a few shots before the sun went in, but I love the pastoral scene with the castle ruins beyond the oblivious horses.
