The fishing village of Clovelly is built on a steep slope - so steep that for many years the only way to access the village was by using donkeys to climb the cobbled streets. Nowadays the donkeys are for show, but there is no vehicular access. Instead, you have to walk down the twisting cobbled lanes past whitewashed cottages to reach the pretty harbour. Clovelly can be busy in the summer months but it remains an utterly charming place to visit, in a superb coastal setting.
