Until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the medieval church of St Paul Without the Walls buried their dead at St Augustine's Abbey. When the abbey was suppressed, a new burial ground was purchased on Longport, a few minutes' walk from the church. This burial ground in turn closed in 1953 and was transformed into a public park, with the old gravestones arranged around the park walls.
