The major attraction for most visitors to Oxfordshire is the county town (really a city, as it has a cathedral) of Oxford. Aside from the 'city of dreaming spires' there are some lovely historic towns and villages to explore. Here are some of our favourites.
As you might deduce from the name, the small village of Westwell is home to the most westerly well in Oxfordshire. The Knights Hospitallers once held the 12th-century church of St Mary. The font and rafters are Norman, as is the east rose window. Near the altar is an early 17th-century tomb of Richard Thorneton.

Witney is a historic market town in western Oxfordshire, boasting a lovely wide green, a medieval Butter Cross, and a superb Early English parish church. Witney was for many centuries a centre for blanket manufacture. Among the many elegant old buildings that surround the green is the Henry Box School, founded in 1660.
