The Village has a 13th Century Church shop and Post Office and several literary connections. It was the early home of Thomas Hughes whose renowned book "Tom Brown's Schooldays" begins in the old school here. It is now an interesting little museum.
John Betjeman lived here in the 1930's and 40's during which time he wrote many famous works. Tolkein while based in Oxford visited this area and it is said much of his inspiration for Middle Earth came from the Ridgeway nearby. An ideal base for walking cycling horse-riding angling visiting historic properties golfing or just chilling out at any time of the year.
