At the end of a long green stands St Mary's church, begun in the 12th centuy and topped by a striking central spire that rises 156 feet. Look for memorials to the Wenman family, especially the tomb of Richard Wenman, a wealthy Tudor wool merchant who paid 80% of all taxes due in Witney in 1524.
