Littlehampton Museum (c) Basher Eyre
Littlehampton Museum

Located in an imposing 18th-century manor house in central Littlehampton, the Littlehampton Museum showcases local artists and craftspeople and explores the history of the Littlehampton area. There are collections of archaeology, maritime history, and photography.

There is also an ongoing programme of changing exhibits and special educational activities throughout the year.

Highlights

The museum's permanent galleries trace the history of Littlehampton from the Bronze Age to the present day, with an exceptional array of archaeological finds. See ancient fossils and explore how Littlehampton developed from a sleepy seaside village to a popular Victorian spa town.

The museum holds over 50,000 artefacts, with only a small portion on view at any one time.

One recent acquisition is an Anglo-Saxon Gold 'Plate' dated to the period AD 570-630. Other highlights include exhibits on local boatbuilders and a look at Avon House and the history of giving donkey rides on Littlehamption beach.

Museum Beginnings

The museum's history dates back to 1928 when the Littlehampton Natural Science and Archaeology Society was formed. The museum moved to Manor House in 1991 and it shares the elegant building with the town council. Manor House was begun around 1790.
