Hardham is a small village beside the River Arun, on the old Roman Stane Street. The pride of Hardham is the parish church of St Botolph, which boasts early medieval wall paintings that may be the finest in Britain.
The murals date to about the year 1100, and are probably the work of monks from the priory of St Pancras at Lewes, who were responsible for similar paintings in other Sussex locations. Among the scenes depicted are the Serpent tempting Adam and Eve, and St George having a go at his dragon.
Just outside the village is the site of Hardham Priory, a house of Augustinian canons founded in 1248. A farmhouse stands on the site now, and it is in private hands.
Two miles away stands Parham House, a stunning Elizabethan mansion set in wonderful gardens.
