Storrington and District Museum

Storrington and District Museum is a fascinating museum of local history covering archaeology, domestic history, local trades and crafts, and much more. There are displays on Storrington during the two World Wars, plus medieval carvings and other finds from local churches.

Included are maps, postcards, photos, and paintings of local scenes. There are local genealogy records for people interested in tracing their family history.

The museum tells the stories of many famous people who made their home in Storrington and the surrounding area, including William Penn, novelist Arnold Bennett, and writer John Galsworthy.

Displays cover not only Storrington but the neighbouring villages of villages of Washington, Ashington, Bury, Cootham, Thakeham, Parham, Sullington, West Chiltington, Amberley, and Wiggonholt.

The museum is operated entirely by volunteers. As a result, opening times may have to be adapted to availability of volunteers.

The museum is housed in the Old School, opposite the parish church on School Lane. The school began in 1763 due to a bequest by Mrs Jane Downer. The present building was opened in 1868 and closed in 1964 when the school moved to modern buildings elsewhere, leaving the beautiful Victorian school building available. The museum opened in 2000 to celebrate the Millennium.
