Harlech Castle photo, Harlech Castle

Famous for the 'Men of Harlech' song, the castle deserves a visit for its superb location, sited atop a high cliff looking across to Lleyn and north to the peaks of Snowdonia. Harlech was erected by Edward I in 1283 to impose his rule on north Wales. The main architect was Edward's master mason, Master James of St George, who created a marvel of medieval military engineering.
