In the north transept is this ancient oak chest bound with iron straps. It is thought to date to the late 12th century, and was possibly made as a collection box for the Third Crusade (1189-1192). This hypothesis is enhanced by the fact that there is a slot in the lid, as for a place to drop coins in.
