St Paul's Cathedral at Night

The Story Behind the Image - St Paul's Cathedral at Night

Here you see the famous dome of St Paul's Cathedral, one of London's most historic icons, illuminated at night.

The thing I recall most about taking this photo is that in order to get this view I had to set my tripod up against the window of a popular pizzeria opposite the cathedral.

So, while I photographed, hordes of hungry diners watched through the restaurant windows. I felt more than a little self-conscious.

The other thing I remember is that I had to use a very long exposure, due to the low light. That was fine, but during the course of a 30-second exposure, I might get one or two double-decker London buses passing directly through the scene, leaving a red blur.

I had to watch carefully for a gap in the stream of buses and click the shutter as soon as one had passed, while the next one was still 100 yards away. It took a dozen or so attempts before I got this photo in a gap between buses!
