Echt, Aberdeenshire
History, tourist information, and nearby accommodation
HERITAGE RATING:

Echt Kirk, 1804
Echt is a small village standing in the shadow of the Barmekin of Echt, where an Iron Age fort occupies the hilltop. The Barmekin was a central point in the popular A Scots Quair trilogy of novels by LG Gibbons.
The parish church was built in 1804. Opposite the church is Echt Hall, the community hall, standing near the site of the 19th-century hiring fairs, where landowners selected labourers and servants for the forthcoming year.
Two miles away is Dunecht House, a mid-Victorian mansion built for the Earl of Crawford.
The area is full of historic sites, including Sunhoney Stone Circle, Midmar Kirk Stone Circle, and Cullerlie Stone Circle. A few miles further afield are Drum Castle and Castle Fraser.
