A small village near Hadrian's Wall, Chollerford is home to two popular visitor attractions. The first, and most ancient, is Chesters Roman Fort, a cavalry fort built to guard the Roman bridge over the North Tyne River. Extensive remains can still be seen of most of the buildings, including a large bathhouse beside the river.

A historic town close to Hadrian's Wall, Corbridge began as Corstopitum, built by the Romans to supply troops manning the Wall. Stones from the Roman town have been used in many local buildings, including the Vicar's Pele, a fortified tower house beside the church.

A small hamlet six miles or so southwest of Alnwick. Edlingham is set in a lovely valley. There is not much of Edlingham itself, but there is plenty of historical interest. The medieval church of St John the Baptist is well worth a visit.

Elsdon is an unspoilt medieval village, the largest settlement within the Northumberland National Park. Look for the remains of a Norman castle motte, a 14th-century fortified pele tower, and a 14th-century church built to mark the spot where monks carrying St Cuthbert's relics paused to rest.

A small village near the sea, six miles northwest of Alnwick, Embleton is the home of dramatic Dunstanburgh Castle, a ruinous 14th-century fortress on a windswept headland. There is no road access to the castle, rather, visitors must walk on a mile-long coastal path from Embleton.

Etal is a small village in northern Northumberland, and home to the 14th-century fortress of Etal Castle. The castle was built as a defence against Scottish raids and was destroyed by James IV of Scotland in 1497. Etal is a lovely estate village, built of local stone in the late Victorian period.

Haltwhistle is an attractive town in the South Tyne valley, close to the route of Hadrian's Wall, and on the main A69 route from Carlisle to Newcastle. There are no less than three castles within a few miles of Haltwhistle; Bellister is ruinous, but Blenkinsopp and Thirlwall Castles are well worth a visit. Five miles distant is Housteads Roman Fort, the best-preserved Roman camp on the Wall.
