Loudon Wood Stone Circle (c) Anne Burgess
Loudon Wood Stone Circle

Only fragmentary remains of this recumbent circle remain. There are four stones, including a recumbent stone and one flanking stone, plus three fallen stones.

The stones are set upon an earthen bank raised about 3/4 metre high. The bank is about 18.5 metres in diameter and is roughly circular. A few of the stones have been dressed.

The recumbent stone remains, along with one flanking stone and two upright stones. Historic Environment Scotland has estimated that it would have taken at least 40 adults working together to drag the recumbent stone up the slope.

The upright stones were originally set up on the inner face of the ring-bank. The interior of the circle may have been excavated for a later timber roundhouse.
