Mid Wales is blessed with an extremely large number of fascinating historic churches, many of them originating before AD 1000 and quite a few closely linked to early Welsh saints.
A 14th century church stands on the site of a 6th century hermit cell in remote countryside. The church is known for its superb 15th century rood screen and loft, medieval stone altars and wall paintings, pre-Norman font, and shrine of St Issui.

St Mary's Church in Pilleth is a 13th-century church with a 15th-century tower. Immediately beside the church is a medieval holy well whose water was thought to cure eye diseases. The church stands within the battlefield of Bryn Glas, where in 1402 Owain Glyndwr's Welsh defeated a larger force of English.

St Andrew's Church in Presteigne is a large 13th-century bulding incorporating remains of a 9th-century Saxon church. Look for an early 16th-century Flemish tapestry and medieval chancel roof. St Andrew's is literally a stone's throw from the English border.

St Clement's Church is an early medieval church that was largely rebuilt in the Victorian period. The most interesting historical feature is a medieval font carved with four heads. In the churchyard is the 'Giant's Grave', a mass burial thought to hold the Rhayader Castle garrison killed by Llewelyn the Great in 1231.

Outside the ruined medieval church of St Mary's, beside the River Severn, is the ornate grave of 19th-century social reformer Robert Owen, a native of Newtown and the founder of New Lanark in Scotland. The grave is beautifully decorated in Art Nouveau style.
