The county town of Rutland has a long and rich history. There was a royal manor here in the Saxon period, and the Normans continued to use Oakham as an administrative centre after 1066. In 1180 the Norman baron Walkelin de Ferrers began to fortify the old manor just north of the present High Street, creating Oakham Castle. Only the Great Hall remains of the castle, set within a wide enclosed area bounded by earthen banks.

The name 'Ridlington' is Danish, deriving from 'Hridlan's town'. The first known reference to Ridlington came in the Domesday Book when it was called Redlinctune. However, the origins of the settlement go back into the prehistoric period; excavations in the area have found Iron Age tools, a Bronze Age axe, and evidence of Roman ironworks.
