The attractive village of Braunston-in-Rutland lies just a few miles south-west of the county town of Oakham. It is one of the larger villages in the area, with a pair of historic pubs and a fascinating medieval church.
The village was renamed as Braunston-in-Rutland to avoid confusion with the village of Braunston in Northamptonshire.
The church of All Saints is a mainly 12th-century building with a Norman font and traces of medieval wall paintings. Behind the west tower of the church is a stone statue, about three feet high, of a peculiar creature.
The most plausible explanation is that the carving represents some sort of Celtic Earth Mother figure. Within the church are several medieval wall paintings and medieval brasses in the south aisle.
