The motto of the Rutland County Museum is 'Discover Something Big in England's Smallest County'. The museum is housed in an attractive 18th-century building begun as a riding school in 1794 for the Rutland Fencible Cavalry.
The collection includes local archaeology artefacts, agricultural history of Rutland, a Victorian kitchen, and a changing programme of temporary displays.
Collection Highlights
One of the most unusual exhibits is the Oakham New Drop Gallows, the last known example of this form of execution. A more pleasant highlight is the Brooke Reliquary, a medieval reliquary box found during renovations at the parish church at Brooke, a few miles south of Oakham. Behind the museum is an award-winning garden area.
The museum houses a large collection of local history material, including photographs, maps, books, and other reference material. There are a variety of family activities and regular events including museum trails, old-fashioned games, dressing up games, and family workshops.
The museum is well signposted and is within an easy stroll of the High Street.
