Egleton village stands at the west end of Rutland Water, a few miles south of the county town of Oakham.
At one end of the village is a nature reserve (signposted 'Bird Watching'). The reserve offers several miles of paths along the shore with access to hides that offer views of a wide variety of waterfowl.
Egleton is the centrepoint of the annual Bird Watching Festival (popularly known as BirdFest). A fee applies to access the reserve, which has daylight only hours as of this writing.
At the other end of the village is the parish church of St Edmund, which boasts a quite superb early Norman south door with a tympanum depicting a lion and dragon, while the chancel arch is also beautifully carved with Norman decorative patterns. A real gem of a church in a quiet village setting.
