The Old Vicarage, Coombes, West Sussex (c) Peter Whitcomb
The Old Vicarage, Coombes

The tiny hamlet of Coombes, West Sussex, is home to about 40 people and is worth visiting to see the wonderful Saxon church, which is justly famous for its superb Norman murals.

The earliest of these wall paintings date to about 1087 and were probably painted by monks from the Priory of St Pancras at Lewes, who were also responsible for the superb paintings at Clayton church.

The church bell was cast in France about 1150, making it the second oldest in Sussex.

The church stands at Coombes Farm, a working farm offering farm experience tours and tractor and trailer trips over the South Downs.
