Wiston Castle


Wales is famous for its castles, many of them erected by Edward I as part of his successful attempts to subdue Wales at the end of the 13th century. But aside from the Edwardian castles - most of which are in north Wales, there are a number of native Welsh castles to explore. Some of these, like Castell-y-Bere and Dolbadarn, stand in fantastically scenic area. The south of the country has a large number of castles built by the Normans during their first incursions into the country.

As always, these photos are places we've had the chance to visit so far, so there may be famous castles which don't yet have a photo!

It is hard to pick my favourites, for there are so many interesting castles to enjoy, but here's an off-the-top of my head list of the 5 most scenic castles in Wales:
