Dirnanean is a hillside garden covering 1.5 hectares, with a further 7 hectares of countryside walks. The garden is set at 1,000 feet above sea level and offers views over the surrounding Perthshire countryside.
There is a small museum of fascinating old gardening tools to explore. The gardens themselves offer the chance to enjoy terraced walks, lawns, shrubbery, and a walled garden. The walled garden area has been recently restored and features colourful herbaceous borders, box hedges, and a variety of climbing plants, including fragrant jasmine, climbing roses, plums, and clematis.
Look for the restored rockery, garden pond, and an arbour for enjoying the view. There is also a modern orchard and a copper beech hedge. A Strawberry Walk leads visitors past a huge Wellingtonia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) planted in 1870.
A much newer feature is the Burn Walk, restored in 2006, which gives views over a series of dramatic waterfalls.
There are snowdrops and witch hazel to enjoy in spring, azaleas and rhododendrons in early summer, followed by herbaceous borders and delphiniums in high summer. In autumn the colour is provided by acers and aspens.
