Dyffryn Fernant Garden
Dyffryn Fernant Garden

Dyffryn Fernant Garden is a beautiful modern garden in the Preseli Mountains of north-west Pembrokeshire. The six-acre garden was begun from scratch in 1996, built around the owners' home. It is a founder-member of the Great Gardens of West Wales group.

The garden incorporates a remarkable variety of planting in a relatively small area, with separate areas including a bog garden, ornamental grasses, a fernery, and a courtyard garden. The garden is rich in colour and beautifully blended shapes and sizes of plant species.

The garden is located on the edge of the Preseli hills, a few miles from the coast and at the foot of Garn Fawr. It was developed by the owner, Christina Shand, who was inspired by the geography of the local environment.

Garden Highlights

The colourful Front Garden is based on container plantings, while the Courtyard combines succulents with traditional architectural plants. The Rickyard mixes topiary with agapanthus and peonies, while the Orchard Garden is bounded by herbaceous borders that lead into marshy land at the bottom of the valley.

The Bog Garden is centred on a striking obelisk with reflective sides to mirror the sky, and Nicky's Field showcases ornamental grasses in a geometric pattern. Looking down on the house is the Magic Garden, which gives exceptional views over the garden and the valley below.

The garden is well provided with places to sit and enjoy your surroundings. There is a garden library for learning more about gardening and the plants on display.

Our family visited on a sunny day in summer, and the mix of colours, shapes, and scents created a magical experience that will live long in our memories. Dyffryn Fernant is a wonderful garden and a special place to lose yourself in a magnificent setting.
