Drumburgh Castle began as a 13th-century hall house, later fortified as a pele tower using stones from Hadrian's Wall. The pele tower was rebuilt in the form of a bastle house in the early 16th century by Thomas, Lord Dacre. It is now a private residence.

The Duddon Iron Furnace dates to 1736 and is the best-preserved charcoal-fired iron furnace in the north-west of England. The Furnace was powered by locally made charcoal and water power from the River Duddon. It continued in operation until 1867.

In the churchyard of St Mary's church in the little Cumbrian village of Gosforth stands one of the real treasures of pre-Conquest England. This is the so-called Gosforth Cross, a slender column of local red sandstone carved into a Scandinavian cross fully 14.5 feet high.

Hawkshead Grammar School is an attractive Elizabethan school built by the Archbishop of York, Edwin Sandys. Poet William Wordsworth was a student here, along with his brother, John. The school houses exhibits on Wordsworth and shows how the students were taught in days gone by.

In the late medieval period, Furness Abbey owned Hawkshead Hall farm. The Old Courthouse is a small 15th-century building which once formed part of that farm. The building consists of a gateway arch with a room above the arch where court proceedings were held. The Courthouse is supported by a long, sloping buttress.

Heron Mill is a fully-restored corn mill built in 1740 on a site where grain has been ground since at least the 11th century. It takes its name from the presence of an 18th-century heronry (now vanished) and herons are frequently seen near the mill. There are regular milling demonstrations and craft workshops.

A tiny 17th century house where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her children's stories. Hill Top has been preserved exactly as it was when the author left it, right down to her china. A large number of personal effects and mementoes are to be found throughout the house. Many parts of the house were used by Potter for scenes in her books, and copies of her drawings in various rooms show how she incorporated pieces of furniture from the house into her scenes.

A Victorian monument on the summit of Hoad Hill, overlooking the town of Ulverston. The monument commemorates Sir John Barrow, a native of Ulverston, who rose from humble beginnings to become Second Lord of the Admiralty. Barrow helped promote exploration in Africa and Canada and was a founder of the Royal Geographic Society.
