This striking early Victorian building was built over the years 1824-1833 by Sir Robert Smirke for the 4th Duke of Newcastle as a monument to his wife. The east end and transepts were intended to serve as a mausoleum for the Duke and his family.

St Peter's Church dates to the late 11th century and was built to serve the growing community of French Borough, between the castle and the original Saxon settlement. The church was destroyed in the Civil War between King Stephen and Queen Maud and rebuilt in the middle of the 12th century.
