Mind the Troll! Just back from a week at Sunbank. Some positives but many negatives I'm affraid...
As emailed, the keys were left in the door on arrival, so no warm welcome. A brief handshake later on was all we really saw of the owners apart from when we asked for help with the washer.
Only one front door key between 6 of us.
We could see that there was a long drive up to the house (which we liked as it is set well back and up from a very busy main road) but we didn't expect to leave most of the undersides of our cars on top of it! The drive up is very uneven/too high for most cars in the middle and full of dips and bumps. So bring your 4x4's if you have a choice.
The DVD player wasn't working.
Couldn't get the dryer to work.
Only around half the lights had working bulbs in them, many didn't work - making the bathrooms especially dull.
The shower screamed when we used it and there is evidence of two leaks in the ceiling of the living room underneath.
I had to ask how to use the washing machine as the on/off button was missing.
No wardrobes in two of the 3 bedrooms, just the beds and a set of drawers, so nowhere to hang clothes.
There was no itinery book, so no information on rubbish/recycling/local info/taxi/health services etc.
We hid the only key we had in the flowerpots as we often went in and out separately (there is a keypad but no one gave us the code).
There was one pint glass between 6 of us.
No 'fresh eggs/cake' (as others had mentioned in the guestbook) or bottle of wine, as i understood was left for people staying in the yurt. Even though we had huge Happy Birthday balloons up and the owner asked in the week if it was a 'special one'.
The toaster only did 2 rounds at a time - a bit time consuming when there's 6 of you.
The rug in the living room was stained and had seen better days as had some of the appliances.
There may be mice - didn't see any but there was a half-nibbled piece of card left under the stairs and the rest of us all ate at the table!
No one home to pass the key back to when we left, or to ask how our stay went and was just asked by their daughter to leave it back in the door.
Beautiful views, albeit still a bit noisy from the main roadside.
Great walks, but (don't disturb the troll on the back gate as thou shalt not pass!!) that's his land aparently.
A few geocaches about, if you dabble.
Warm as the heating was on FULL BLAST all night.
Plenty of parking.
This place could be sooo much more than it is now with just a few tweaks (they did tell us that they were going to fill in the driveway). But with a little bit more effort it could be greatly improved on.
A lovely place to stay... Sunbank is in a really lovely location and they also have a yurt - which we chose for our stay - and we were so glad that we did. The yurt and the experience was wonderful... really special. The separate bathroom and open kitchen really works and gives a lovely outdoor experience. The views are beautiful, all around. The weather was perfect during our stay and we used the barbecue provided. We will definitely be back... highly recommended. Harrison_F_Carter 2018-07-17
