St Peter's stands on a rise above the River Exe. There was a church here in the 11th century but the current building is mostly 15th century, with the addition of the superb Greenway Chapel (1517), a marvel of the late Perpendicular style, erected by a wealthy merchant. Look for plaster lion and unicorn figures on the mayor's pew, and an organ built in 1696, decorated with carvings [possibly] by Grinling Gibbons.

A surprisingly large and spacious historic church in an isolated rural setting, approached by winding country lanes. One very unusual feature of Torbryan church is that it was built in a single 20-year span, from 1450-1470, and as a result, the building is a strikingly unified Perpendicular Gothic structure.
