Herefordshire is blessed with an extraordinary collection of historic churches, with some especially interesting examples tucked in the rugged countryside near the Welsh border. Perhaps the most famous church in the county is not the glorious edifice of Hereford Cathedral, but the quiet little Norman church at Kilpeck, with its marvellous collection of carved faces decorating both the interior and exterior.

St Peter's church in the aptly named village of Peterchurch is a bit of an odd beast, where old and new intermingle. The old is the church itself and the story of its foundation. According to legend, the church is dedicated to St Peter because the saint himself passed through the area on his way to Rome. An odd sort of route to take, you might say, but who knows where he started from; maybe it was the most direct route!

There was a church at Ross at the time of the Domesday Book, but no trace of that building now remains (though chunks of limestone incorporated into the current building may pre-date the Conquest). The current church of St Mary's is a product of the period between 1280 and 1316 when the building was dedicated.
